SARTRE road train premiere on public roads

43960_1_5
For the first time ever a road train comprising a Volvo XC60, a Volvo V60 and a Volvo S60 plus one truck automatically driving in convoy behind a lead vehicle has operated on a public motorway among other road users. The historic test in Spain was highly successful.

Vehicle platoon tests in the SARTRE (Safe Road Trains for the Environment) project - a joint venture between Ricardo UK Ltd, Applus+ Idiada, Tecnalia Research & Innovation, Institut für Kraftfahrzeuge Aachen (IKA), SP Technical Research Institute, Volvo Technology and Volvo Car Corporation - are making progress. One major step forward was taken last week on a motorway outside Barcelona - the first-ever test drive of a road train among other road users.

"We covered 200 kilometres in one day and the test turned out well. We're really delighted," says Linda Wahlström, project manager for the SARTRE project at Volvo Car Corporation.

A road train consists of a lead vehicle driven by a professional driver followed by a number of vehicles. Building on Volvo Car Corporation's and Volvo Technology's already existing safety systems - including features such as cameras, radar and laser sensors - the vehicles monitor the lead vehicle and also other vehicles in their immediate vicinity. By adding in wireless communication, the vehicles in the platoon "mimic" the lead vehicle using Ricardo autonomous control - accelerating, braking and turning in exactly the same way as the leader.

Improved driver environment - among much else
The project aims to deliver improved comfort for drivers, who can now spend their time doing other things while driving. They can work on their laptops, read a book or sit back and enjoy a relaxed lunch.

Naturally the project also aims to improve traffic safety, reduce environmental impact and - thanks to smooth speed control - cut the risk of traffic tailbacks.

One lead vehicle and four trailing vehicles - consisting of a Volvo S60, a Volvo V60 and a Volvo XC60 plus a truck - made up the historic road train in Spain.

"Driving among other road-users is a great milestone in our project. It was truly thrilling," says Linda Wahlström. The vehicles drove at 85 kilometres an hour. The gap between each vehicle was just six metres. "During our trials on the test circuit we tried out gaps from five to fifteen metres," relates Linda Wahlström.

Quick acclimatisation
Sitting in a car just six metres behind another one while travelling at 85 km/h and relying totally on the technology may feel a bit scary. But the experiences gained so far indicate that people acclimatise very quickly.

The three-year SARTRE project has been under way since 2009. All told, the vehicles in the project have covered about 10,000 kilometres. After the test on the public roads in Spain, the project is now entering a new phase with the focus on analysis of fuel consumption.

"We've learnt a whole lot during this period. People think that autonomous driving is science fiction, but the fact is that the technology is already here. From the purely conceptual viewpoint, it works fine and road train will be around in one form or another in the future," says Linda Wahlström.

She continues:
"We've focused really hard on changing as little as possible in existing systems. Everything should function without any infrastructure changes to the roads or expensive additional components in the cars. Apart from the software developed as part of the project, it is really only the wireless network installed between the cars that set them apart from other cars available in showrooms today."

Volvo Car Corporation partners with Mitsubishi Electric in the development of leading infotainment technology

Volvo Car Corporation has chosen electronic equipment supplier Mitsubishi Electric Corporation as partner for the next-generation infotainment system for future Volvo cars.

"We are very happy to have Mitsubishi Electric Corporation as a partner. Their world-leading knowledge and experience will bring the infotainment system in our cars up to an entirely new level," says Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation.

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation will supply the central module and be the main supplier for the overall infotainment system. This is an important step in Volvo Car Corporation's aim to spearhead the development of world-class connectivity features in cars.

All intuitive technology that is available at the driver's fingertip is included in Volvo Car Corporation's recently established Sensus brand.

Sensus is the interface that promotes instinctive communication with the car, connecting it to the driver's digital world - and the central Infotainment module is a core component in this web of interactivity.

 Charging hardware with intelligent content

Volvo Car Corporation's next challenge is to continue charging the infotainment system with intelligent content that offers the car owner easy, intuitive access to support, information and entertainment.

"We design our cars around people's needs and lifestyle. The extended co-operation with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, who have been a supplier to Volvo Car Corporation for many years, paves the way for integrating new, user-friendly Infotainment and connectivity features in our cars," says Stefan Jacoby, adding: "With Mitsubishi Electric Corporation as a strategic partner we also reinforce our stand-alone position in the automotive world."

The all-new Volvo V40 and Swedish golf Star Peter Hansson are two of the debutants at the 47th Volvo World Match Play Championship. The prestigious tournament will be staged at Finca Cortesín, Andalucia, Spain, from 17th-20th May, 2012.

The Volvo World Match Play Championship will be broadcast in over 150 countries on all five continents. About 1,800 hours of world-class golf TV coverage will generate around US$ 14 million in media value alone. The 2012 Championship will once again attract the best golf players in the world and some 15,000 visitors are expected during the tournament.

24 of the highest-ranking golf players in the world will participate in the Volvo World Match Play Championship. Last year's winner Ian Poulter will defend his title against Swedish pro Peter Hanson, who recently finished third at the US Masters; Branden Grace, winner of the Volvo Golf Champions and Volvo China Open; as well as Justin Rose and home favourite Sergio García .

Meanwhile, through the Volvo World Match Play Championship Pro-am and extensive VIP guest hospitality programme, Volvo Cars continues to deliver distinctive customer care experiences.

Stefan Jacoby, CEO & President of Volvo Car Corporation, said: "Thousands of visitors are expected during the tournament together with some 300 VIP guests. This is a perfect way for Volvo Car Corporation to strengthen our relationship with our customers, to welcome new clients and to make the Volvo brand even more visible. The connection between the world-class line-up of golfing stars we will see compete and Volvo's award-winning range of cars is compelling. This is a unique way to showcase the brand and the products. And on course, to further add to the excitement this year, we have a very special hole-in-one prize on the 10th hole, where the players will have the chance to win the all-new Volvo V40."

Volvos to transport guests of honour to Princess Estelle's christening

43547_1_5
About 500 guests have been invited to attend Princess Estelle's christening in Stockholm's Royal Chapel on 22 May. They will be transported there in 50 cars supplied by Volvo Car Corporation.

At the wedding between Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel in June 2010, Volvo Car Corporation was the official car supplier. 85 white Volvos carried the wedding guests to and from the festivities.

In connection with the christening of Princess Estelle, the guests of honour will be transported in 50 white Volvo S80s and XC60s each featuring a specially created commemorative emblem. Volvo Car Corporation is the main supplier of cars for the royal event.

The Volvos will depart from the Royal Mews and will carry the guests of honour from the various airports to and from their hotels, and between the various activities on the day of the christening.

"We will have the cars from the day before the christening to the day after. The cars will mostly be driven by members of Sweden's Voluntary Motor Transport Corps," says Court Equerry Mertil Melin.

Swedish State Television (SVT) has sole TV broadcasting rights for the christening. It will, besides in Sweden, be broadcast in Germany, among other countries. The event is estimated to be covered by about 400-500 journalists.

"We are delighted that Volvo Car Corporation can participate in historic royal events such as the wedding between Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, and now at Princess Estelle's christening," says Olle Axelson, Senior Vice President Public Affairs at Volvo Car Corporation.

After the christening the cars will be sold through the Swedish dealership network. They will also be able to be purchased by employees of Volvo Car Corporation and AB Volvo. Some of the cars may also be sold via Norwegian Volvo dealerships.

Volvo Car Corporation profitable in 2011

Snv

Volvo Car Corporation recorded an Earnings Before Interest and Taxes (EBIT) of 1 636 MSEK in 2011. Sales improved by 20.3 percent, to 449 255 units.

"I'm pleased looking back on our achievements during the past year. Our sales situation is positive and we have started the journey of turning the company into a successful luxury car brand. At the same time, we remain exposed to external factors and need to maintain focus in implementing our plans to secure sustainable profitability for the future", says Stefan Jacoby, President & CEO.

Financial report 2011

Volvo Car Corporation aims to be open and transparent around the business results. An annual and an interim financial report will be issued to disclose financial information and the business performance of the company. It contains CEO comments, a summary of the business and market development, as well as financial statements for the full-year and six-month period.

Full year 2011 results

A strong product and market mix contributed to a revenue of 125.5 BSEK and an EBIT of 1 636 MSEK for 2011. Profitability was mainly affected by increased research & development costs and industrial capacity to support expansion plans and the new product strategy, in particular in the second half of the year. Additionally, unfavourable exchange rates and higher raw material prices affected results negatively.

Retail sales in 2011 increased by 20.3 per cent to 449,255 units. Significant growth was recorded in all sales regions, with China demonstrating an increase of 54.4 per cent over 2010. US grew by 24.7 per cent, Sweden by 10.5 per cent, and Europe improved by 10 per cent compared to 2010. Market shares improved in all major markets compared to prior year.
