The new Heritage Club from Volvo will recognize long-term owners of the brand

Volvo launches Heritage Club for owners of older and high-mileage cars

Volvo Cars of North America (VCNA) will launch the new Volvo Heritage Club on Nov. 1 as a way to recognize and celebrate long-term or high-mileage owners.

Membership in the Volvo Heritage Club will be granted to anyone who meets one of these eligibility requirements:

An owner who has had one or more Volvos for at least 10 consecutive years
An owner whose Volvo has more than 100,000 original miles
Any owner who was a member of the former Volvo High Mileage Club

"We decided to launch the Volvo Heritage Club with one distinct difference from our previous High Mileage Club," said VCNA President and CEO John Maloney. "This club acknowledges our passionate owners who may have had many different Volvos over time but never had a particular car with high mileage. When you combine both long-standing loyalty and high-mileage achievements, well, that's a club that truly represents the heritage of a car brand."

Volvo was one of the first auto manufacturers to reward drivers for their high-mileage accomplishments. In fact, origins of the first Volvo High Mileage Club date back to the 1960s when the first car medallions, then only produced for 100,000-mile achievements, began to appear.

Upon acceptance into the new Volvo Heritage Club, club members will receive a commemorative Volvo Heritage Club medallion to display on their vehicle. They'll be kept up-to-date with the latest Volvo news, obtain previews of new product offerings, gain access to exclusive promotions and offers, receive special invitations to Volvo events and more.

The commemorative Volvo Heritage Club medallions will be issued in the following achievement levels:

Consecutive years of ownership: 10, 15, 20 and 25 years
Mileage milestones: 100,000, 200,000, 300,000, 400,000, 500,000, 750,000 and 1,000,000 miles.

Volvo's innovative technology is on track to make our daily commutes easier and faster!

Weport

Volvo to introduce new traffic jam assistance system

Crashes in slow-moving traffic may not be at the top of anyone’s list of pressing highway issues, but the reality is they cause a staggering amount of trouble for everyone on the road. Volvo recently announced a plan to minimize the exhausting chore of keeping alert in extended stop-and-go driving, though, and the company aims to equip all their vehicles with the technology by 2014.

Their “traffic jam assistance function” is an evolution of their current Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Aid technology introduced in the all-new Volvo V40 earlier this year. A push of a button activates the system and the car automatically maintains a set distance to the vehicle in front of it. At any time, the driver can take back control of the car.

The system ought to be given a round of applause. Right now, on your daily road commute to and from work in stop-and-go traffic, all any driver has to do is give a good bump to the car ahead and both drivers have to stop and get out of their cars to survey the damage while tens of thousands of cars behind them merge to remaining lanes, causing massive delays, billions of gallons of wasted gas and, in some cases, more crashes. In worst-case scenarios, one or more of the cars are disabled, people are injured or worse, and the police, emergency vehicles, fire trucks and ambulances have to quickly get to the scene while a whole highway system is essentially shut down.

"This technology makes driving more relaxed in the kind of monotonous queuing that is a less attractive part of daily driving in urban areas. It offers you a safe, effortless drive in slow traffic," says Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development of Volvo Car Corporation.

Volvo, a leader in auto safety, isn’t stopping there. Their eventual aim is to popularize “autonomous” driving, whereby a car’s steering, braking and acceleration are controlled by means other than driver input.

On top of improved safety, the technology offers several advantages:

• Autonomous driving can cut fuel consumption significantly.

• It has the potential for shortening travel times by improving traffic flow.

• It paves the way for more freedom behind the wheel by creating possibilities for the driver to safely focus on something else while the car is driven autonomously.

"The average driver spends about 250 hours commuting every year. We believe that being able to use the time more efficiently will benefit both the individual and the society," stated Peter Mertens.

Volvo is set to premiere their V60 Racing today, so be on the lookout!

Volvo

Volvo to reveal V60 Racing in 850 BTC racer tribute livery at São Paulo Auto Show

Though its reputation here in the States has been built almost solely on its reputation for safety, Volvo has so much racing heritage that it can realistically create tributes to some of the most historic racing vehicles in its 85-year history. The latest competition-ready Volvo will be on display at the São Paulo Auto Show in Brazil on October 23rd.

Based on the Volvo V60 wagon, the imaginatively named V60 Racing will show off new livery in tribute to the classic 850 models that competed in the British Touring Car Championship in the 1990s. Though it's only being teased at this point, we're expecting a predominately blue and white paint job with a few splashes of yellow.

With Halloween just around the corner we wanted to brush up on some fun facts!

Humes

  1. Because the movie Halloween (1978) was on such a tight budget, they had to use the cheapest mask they could find for the character Michael Meyers, which turned out to be a William Shatner Star Trek mask. Shatner initially didn’t know the mask was in his likeness, but when he found out years later, he said he was honored.
  2. The first Jack O’Lanterns were actually made from turnips.
  3. Halloween is the second highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas.
  4. The word “witch” comes from the Old English wicce, meaning “wise woman.” In fact, wiccan were highly respected people at one time. According to popular belief, witches held one of their two main meetings, or sabbats, on Halloween night.

  5.
Samhainophobia is the fear of Halloween.
  6. Fifty percent of kids prefer to receive chocolate candy for Halloween, compared with 24% who prefer non-chocolate candy and 10% who preferred gum.
  7. The owl is a popular Halloween image. In Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches, and to hear an owl's call meant someone was about to die.
  8. According to Irish legend, Jack O’Lanterns are named after a stingy man named Jack who, because he tricked the devil several times, was forbidden entrance into both heaven and hell. He was condemned to wander the Earth, waving his lantern to lead people away from their paths.
  9. The largest pumpkin ever measured was grown by Norm Craven, who broke the world record in 1993 with a 836 lb. pumpkin.
  10. Stephen Clarke holds the record for the world’s fastest pumpkin carving time: 24.03 seconds, smashing his previous record of 54.72 seconds. The rules of the competition state that the pumpkin must weigh less than 24 pounds and be carved in a traditional way, which requires at least eyes, nose, ears, and a mouth.

Volvo is only making 250 of their newest Limited Edition vehicles, so you better move fast!

Volvo

Volvo Introduces 2013 C30 Polestar Limited Edition

While the Volvo C30 has often been called the sportiest-looking Volvo, a new, limited-production version may also be called an "enthusiast magnet" when it makes its way to showrooms in November.

The 2013 Volvo C30 Polestar Limited Edition will definitely be limited in volume - only 250 will be made, beginning in October.  But it won't be limited when it comes to youthful exuberance and is packaged in a remarkably attractive and affordable container.  The base MSRP is $32,445, which includes an $895 destination charge.

The excitement begins under the hood where the C30's standard 2.5-liter turbocharged 5-cylinder engine receives a healthy performance upgrade. Polestar, Volvo's official performance partner, provides performance software that boosts output by 23 horsepower and 37 lb.-ft. of torque to 250 hp and 273 lb.-ft. The improvement in power and torque is achieved through increased turbo boost in combination with re-optimized ignition and fuel maps.

Polestar's upgrade offers the best of both worlds: Optimized power and torque without affecting certified fuel consumption. This is possible thanks to efficient tuning of the engine which only increases the power output when it's needed. Thus EPA fuel economy estimates are identical to the standard C30 T5 R-Design with 21 mpg city/29 mpg highway for the six-speed manual transmission and 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway with the optional five-speed Geartronic automatic.

The visual magnetism of the C30 Polestar Limited Edition is enhanced with new 17-inch Styx alloy wheels with matte black finish and Polestar badges on the rear and sides of the vehicle. To signify that this C30 is special, all 250 iterations will wear the new-for-2013 exterior hue of Rebel Blue and have a special interior numbered plate.

Inside, the C30 Polestar Limited Edition's sporty cabin is dressed with premium leather seating surfaces in a choice of Off-Black or two-tone Off-Black and Calcite. Standard features, equivalent to the Premier Plus trim level of the C30 T5 R-Design, include a power glass sunroof, power driver's seat with memory, soft loadcover, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, power passenger's seat, LED daytime running lights, Keyless Drive and active dual Xenon headlights.

Customers can further upgrade this model by selecting the optional Platinum trim level. This includes the superb Volvo Premium Sound System with Dolby® Pro Logic® II Surround Sound, 10 loudspeakers and an astonishing 650 watts. Also included is a navigation system with real time traffic, remote control and map care plus Sirius/XM satellite radio.

The C30 Polestar Limited Edition features standard R-Design cues including a color-coordinated body kit, front grille R-Design logo, R-Design watch dial instrument cluster, unique aluminum inlays, R-Design sport steering wheel and sport pedals.

For 2013, this version - like all C30s - gains standard rain sensor windshield wipers and headlight washers. A Climate Package can be added to the C30 Polestar Limited Edition with heated front seats, Electronic Climate Control (ECC) and Interior Air Quality System (IAQS).

A Sport Chassis, standard on the C30 T5 R-Design and C30 Polestar Limited Edition, provides improved chassis dynamics and steering reflexes. Compared to the C30 T5, spring stiffness for the R-Design is increased by 30 percent while the dampers feature a mono-tube design that builds up pressure quicker for 20 percent increased low-speed damping. Steering is more precise with stiffer bushings and a 10-percent-quicker steering ratio.

Like all C30s, the C30 Polestar Limited Edition is well-equipped with standard safety features including Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC), Volvo's Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) and Whiplash Protection Seating System (WHIPS).

Volvo is on the front lines as it paves way for Car-To-Car communications

Volvo_self_driving_cars

Volvo is paving the way for the implementation of Car-2-Car and Car-2-Object communication systems in its own vehicles with the signing today of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with fellow members of the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium being run in Europe. The consortium’s goal is to come to an agreement that will eventually lead to shared technology for communication between cars and roadside infrastructure by 2016, which hopefully will mean safer and less congested roads in the future.

The technology is also a crucial element for the development of autonomous cars, including the stepping stone ‘road train’ system that was successfully demonstrated by Volvo and other firms in the recent SARTRE project.

Development under the new CAR 2 CAR project encompasses several different research fields. Some relate to the way cars can communicate with each other (Car-2-Car), for instance, to provide information in the event of road-works or a road accident, while others focus on how the infrastructure can convey information about what is happening along the route (Car-2-Object).

Note, Volvo is not the only automaker looking to further develop Car-2-Car and Car-2-Object communication systems. In the U.S., General Motors is working with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration in the Connected Vehicle Safety Pilot Model Deployment Program being run in Michigan, while in Europe automakers such as Ford and Daimler are working together in a similar program called Safe Intelligent Mobility - Testfield Germany.

Experts believe roads could be made safer and traffic congestion reduced by using communications technology to integrate vehicles with each other and with transport infrastructure. For example, if the tail-end of a traffic jam is hidden behind the crest of a hill or heavy fog, vehicles approaching the problem area can be alerted in good time, allowing the driver to take appropriate action, or perhaps even enabling autonomous systems to take control and prevent an impending crash.

In addition to this, another benefit is improved fuel economy. For example, via a transmitter attached to a traffic light, a driver can be informed about what speed to maintain in order to make it through several consecutive green lights. This has a range of benefits such as steadier traffic flow, greater comfort for drivers, lower fuel consumption and lower emissions.

We’ll keep you updated as the CAR 2 CAR project progresses.
